Clifton Cognac

Clifton Cognac is an absolutely perfect young rider, junior or amateur horse as he will capably and willingly take them up the grades. He is incredibly easy to ride with a totally unflappable temperament which means he always scores consistently well and in the top few for the dressage – regardless of what the weather is doing or what is going on around him. Although he is tall and well built so he can carry a taller or bigger rider he is also quite short-coupled and compact so almost any size of rider can get a very good tune out of him. Snaffle mouth in all phases. Never looks at anything cross country. In all ways he is willing and cooperative but very laid-back.

Won Aldon CCI* October 2011 in class of 67 starters:

  • Dressage 43.1 (second place).
  • Cross country – clear under time – (still second place).
  • Show Jumping – clear to finish on dressage score of 43.1 – First place.

Easily moved up to Intermediate level May 2012. Always jumped clear cross country, including the tough tracks at Barbury CIC** and Belton CIC**. Never was pushed for time at Intermediate horse trails, but wastes no time into or away from a fence so very capable of fast times, as he showed at Tattersalls CCI**.

10th Tattersalls CCI** June 2013 in class of 69 starters:

  • Dressage 44.8 (7th place).
  • Cross country – clear under time over a tough long track (moved up to 5th place).
  • Show jumping – had one unlucky rail to finish on 48.8 (10th place). Would have finished third without this rail.
  • Read more about the Aldon CCI* competition.

Numerous wins & placings at ODEs. Won or finished in top 10 at over 60% of his eventing starts – 14 out of 23.

Able to carry a tall or bigger rider with ease, but also suitable for a smaller rider as he is quite short-coupled and compact so is easy to get connected. He is attractive to look at with three excellent dressage paces – all of which helps he achieve such good scores every time he goes in the ring! He is an incredibly affectionate horse. Loves all people. Easy for anyone to handle, however nervous or inexperienced they are. He has beautiful manners at all times. He is always the favourite around the stables as he has such a lovely nature that everyone loves him! Can easily be hacked out by Mum, Dad or inexperienced sibling or groom as he will never put a foot wrong.

Born in Germany 25/5/2003. German registration number DE441411300703. Sire: Ehrentusch, Dam: Samantha. Did very little until acquired by Clifton eventers at the end of 2010.

The 'Clifton' stable is world-renowned for producing a small selection of hand-picked horses to become top-class eventers. Over the last 15 years they have produced 8 different horses to represent New Zealand at senior team level, with 6 different riders. All of these horses except one were bought as green youngsters and produced from scratch by Clifton eventers who always develop horses slowly and correctly to gain the best long-term results at the major competitions. Clifton horses have been sold to riders across the globe, including David O'Connor when he was reigning Olympic Eventing Champion. Many have also been chosen by amateur, junior or young riders due to the horses' excellent correct basic training which makes them easy to ride and sets them up for long successful competition careers.

Due to the founders of Clifton Eventers having moved from New Zealand, there are now only 6 Clifton horses still in their ownership. Clifton Cognac and Clifton Dickara (see separate advert) are the only horses to be offered for sale by them in the last 12 months. This very rare opportunity to join the elite band of Clifton Eventer owners and riders is now available. Clifton Cognac is ready to follow in the hoof prints of the only other four Clifton horses still owned by Clifton Eventers. They are all UK based and their results speak for themselves:

  • Clifton Promise – Winner Badminton CCI4*, 2nd Burghley & Pau CCI4*, Olympic bronze medalist.
  • Clifton Lush – Winner Bramham CIC3*, 2nd Blair Castle Scottish Championships CIC3*, twice 5th Burghley CCI4*, 3rd Badminton CCI4*.
  • Clifton Pinot – 5th Luhmühlen CCI4*, 5th Houghton CIC3*.
  • Clifton Signature – 4th Blenheim CIC3* 8/9yo, 3rd Hartpury CCI2*.

Clifton Cognac has plenty of scope for jumping and is brave, accurate, honest and careful cross country. He does not pull and keeps a lovely even stride and rhythm into, over and away from the fence. He actively looks for the next fence and will do whatever it takes to try and jump it, even if the rider is out of position, loses their reins or has some other problem. Jock Paget has trained him beautifully so has no issues with any type of cross country fence – water, ditches, skinnies, corners etc – they have only ever had one silly '20' cross country in all their starts.

Clifton Cognac is offered for sale by Clifton Eventers as they have become rather disillusioned with the FEI and Equestrian Sports New Zealand as a result of events following Burghley 2013. They also need to recoup some of the great expense they incurred fully funding Kevin McNab's defence against the FEI case. There is no regret by Clifton Eventers at having spent so much to help totally exonerate the riders and all concerned of any wrong-doing, but it has still been a very large and unexpected cost.

Clifton Cognac is re-advertised after having been held for a previous overseas client whose date for coming to view kept being delayed.

Clifton Cognac is very well priced for a quick sale to the right home, but only serious buyers should enquire please.
