April Magrath
April joined the Clifton Eventers team in October 2010 as a working pupil after a very persistent application!
The outgoing, positive and enthusiastic 17-year-old hails from Dunedin at the bottom of the South Island. She has spent her whole life around horses, with all members of her family keen riders. Her mother is a dressage instructor, although April admits she is probably not her mum's best pupil!
She has three horses at home, Ed, Floyd and Cheese and has brought Ru (Acapella) along with her to Muriwai to receive instruction on as part of the working pupil arrangement.
In addition to riding her own horse, she exercises two Clifton horses every day, Clifton Riviera andClifton Domino, and ride some of the others occasionally, such as Clifton Pledge, which she finished seventh on at Taupo Training Trial. She also gets lessons from Jock, Summer and Patrick, which she says helps her a lot.
Being a South Island girl she is quite happy to ride in all conditions, claiming that she "actually likes riding in the rain".
April is in charge of rugs for all the horses, so it's her responsibility to ensure the different rugs for the 20-25 horses are properly maintained. She is also the resident comedian.
"I like the fact that although everyone here is very hard working, we get on together, most of the time! I like that well help each other out with our riding, so if someone is having trouble with something another one of us will provide tips and we all have enough experience that we can share ideas together.
Her goal to become an international eventer. "Now that I have been at Clifton Eventers a few weeks and seen what I can achieve in a short space of time, I am sure that this is what I want to do and to be the best that I can!"
We're sure she will.
